Ladycross Infant and Nursery School

Supporting Reading at Home

There are many different ways in which you can support your child in their reading journey. The best way to learn to read is to practise reading little and often.

Your child will come home with a reading book carefully matched to their phonics knowledge. Try and aim to read with your child at least 5 times a week.
As your child learns new sounds at school, you will be provided with sound flashcards and/or a Rocket Phonics sound mat. Please use this resource to support your child as they learn new sounds.
To help encourage your child to read at home, we have a termly reading bookmark that is used to track how many reads are being  competed. Certificates are awarded at intervals for the number of reads completed, with 4 special certificates available each term.
Our aim is for every child to leave Ladycross with a love of reading. To support this goal, each class has access to a range of book genres which can be taken home and read with an older sibling or adult. It is not expected that the children will be able to read these books, rather they can enjoy the story with someone else reading! These books can be changed as many times a week as the child would like.
